April Owlcrate & Book of the Month Unboxing

April’s subscription boxes arrived with their vibrant colors & I am more than happy with the selections. earlier in April I read & reviewed The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli & fell hard for the characters & Becky’s writing style. This book brought me so much happiness thatΒ I flew right through it. My smile lingered for many days after & I still think about Molly Peskin-Suso & crew. This means that I am all the more curious about Simon who had a small cameo in Upside. I own the e-book so I suppose it’s all a matter of timing now πŸ˜‰

April’sΒ theme was Head Over Heels, in the box wereΒ the following items:Β

1 Hardcover copy of The Upside of Unrequited by Becky AlbertalliΒ (5 star read)

1 signed bookplate sticker

1 Decal sticker (not pictured above, found this waaay after photo was taken lol)

1 Storiarts Pride & Prejudice book headbandΒ (I’ll prob wear indoors since I feel I don’t have the head for this lol)

1 Simon Vs. the Homosapiens Agenda keychain from the Bookworm BoutiqueΒ (maybe once I read Simon, I’ll feel less fraudulentΒ about carrying this item on my key chain ha!)

1 Anna and the French kiss Chocolate Cherry Bomb Tea from The Tea SPotΒ (will be trying this one out this wknd but it smells delish!)

1 Novelly Yours Candle inspired by one of Rainbow Rowell’s books (1 of 3 scents were sent), I received Baz & Simon in Raspberry & (GAHHHHH! smells SOOooooO Good! fave item besides book of course lol)

1 Evie Bookish print inspired by A Court of Thorns & RosesΒ (least fave item simply because i’m not big on these small art prints)

1 Umberland (Everland, Book 2) by Wendy Spinale PREVIEW (Amazon buy link for finished book here) (Never read the 1st book soooo yea…lol)

1 Owlcrate exclusive themed pinΒ (goes right on my book tote)

My Box Rating:Β β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… (3.75 STARS)

April’s BOTM pick was a bit tricky, but there was one name in the blurb that sealed the deal for this one: for readers/fans of Mindy Khaling…moment of silence for my Queen…K, I’ll pretty much read any non-fiction with a bit of humor so I wasΒ so happy to come across Scaachi Kohl’s short story collection. Goodreads has since edited the blurb to exclude any comparisons to Mindy K. but I read some reviews & they maintain that it is in fact along those lines. Besides this though & most importantly is that this is a short story collection by a woman of color, daughter to Indian immigrants based on relevant issues affecting manyΒ woman of color. I may get the audiobook to read along since I prefer to listen to memoirs narrated by the authors themselves πŸ˜‰

Goodreads Blurb

A collection of essays about growing up the daughter of Indian immigrants in Canada, “a land of ice and casual racism,” by the cultural observer, Scaachi Koul.

In One Day We’ll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter, Scaachi deploys her razor-sharp humour to share her fears, outrages and mortifying experiences as an outsider growing up in Canada. Her subjects range from shaving her knuckles in grade school, to a shopping trip gone horribly awry, to dealing with internet trolls, to feeling out of place at an Indian wedding (as an Indian woman), to parsing the trajectory of fears and anxieties that pressed upon her immigrant parents and bled down a generation. Alongside these personal stories are pointed observations about life as a woman of colour, where every aspect of her appearance is open for critique, derision or outright scorn. Where strict gender rules bind in both Western and Indian cultures, forcing her to confront questions about gender dynamics, racial tensions, ethnic stereotypes and her father’s creeping mortality–all as she tries to find her feet in the world.

Every time I consider canceling my BOTM subscription just so that I can catch up with the ones I have so far…They hit me with the ALL STAR LINE-UP of books I can’t resist smh. I’ll tell you right now, May was no different since I’ve already selected my books & they sweetened the deal lol. Another perk to this box is that at least one of the books in the box (as of late) is a pre-release which I think is AWESOME! So, since they’ve already charged me the renewal fee, you can expect to see at least 3 more of these un-boxings LOL!

What are yourΒ thoughts on the April Owlcrate box? Have any of my bookish peeps read The Upside of Unrequited? For my fellow BOTM subscribers, what were your selections for April? also, if you subscribe to any other boxes & have done a unboxing, drop yourΒ link down below <3’s!

  1. I always love seeing your unboxing posts each month Lilly. I don’t get the Owl Crate boxes anymore but I still love seeing what’s inside them! I really need to read The Upside of Unrequited, it sounds like a brilliant book and based on all the amazing reviews I’ve seen I feel like it’ll be one I love as well. Also I love bookish candles, the Simon and Baz one you got sounds just amazing!
Also your BoTM book sounds really interesting as well, I hope it’s one you really enjoy. πŸ˜€

      1. That’s all right. I guess it’s a case of the grass is always greener! πŸ˜€ Either way the Comic Book Explosion theme sounds amazing, I can’t wait to see what you get for that box! πŸ˜€
I feel they’re tiny on purpose to get you to spend the money on a full sized one! πŸ™‚
        That’s all right. ❀

      2. Haha! True. I have a hunch that it’s Eliza & Her Monsters which I have a galley of so that makes me happy lol. The artwork in that book is πŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜ & they totally do that with the candles to get your money πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  2. I enjoyed the one experience with Owl Crate that I had. They seem to offer a lot. But I just feel like for some the items, they are on the pricier end? Or maybe I am too cheap haha. I have two boxes coming this month. I gifted myself one of each πŸ˜‰ No subs haha. But one implements used books, so I am pretty curious. Your photos turned out great ❀

    1. Thank you Danielle! I think sometimes It can be pricey but then there are months where the curation is actually valued much higher than the subscription and so it evens out lol. This mth it was mehhh on the items with the exception of the candle of course since I’m a sucker for fruity smelling candles smh. ❀ πŸ˜‰

      1. Texted out? What does this mean? Sorry, if it’s obvious sometimes things go over my head lol. So with Owlcrate I post as I receive them since they’ve been hella late with sending me my box. Usually by the 25th of every mth I post the unboxing. I’m curious as to which boxes you subbed toπŸ€”πŸ’

      2. Oh I used to sub to Uppercase! Til they started sending me YA mushy contemps back to back. On stop so I quit. I still check on them from time to time though & it seems like they’ve upped their curation game up a bit so yay for that! πŸ™ŒπŸΌ can’t wait to see you post them πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

      3. I opted for sci-fi/fantasy and think it went well πŸ˜‰ But really for the price of the boxes that only supply books, I feel like I could spend the same or less and choose the ones I want. I guess the mystery is the fun haha… but just saying πŸ˜›

      4. Yes, I think that’s always the case tbh but I love guessing what will come my way. I’m not really surprised anymore by the book pick since the clues are pretty generous on the details lol

  3. Oh man. I saw the picture and thought the headband was a scarf! I got all excited until I read that it was actually a headband… Not sure I’d wear the headband either. I tried Owlcrate out once, and have followed unboxings, but I find that I either LOVE the contents or not so much… so I don’t have a subscription. I’ve contemplated other subscription services like “My Lit Box” that I think are a little more my style.

    1. LOL! I thought it was a scarf too! but no sadly it’s just a weird contraption of a “headband” that I’ve turned into a pony tail holder. I completely understand, Owlcrate has recently improved on their curation & book selections so I’m thankful for that. I also really like My Lit Box, I can def see why it’s more your stilo πŸ˜‰
