First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros: Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray

Every Tuesday, Diane over atย Bibliophile By the Seaย hostsย First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where bloggers share the first paragraph of the book they are currently reading or thinking about reading soon.

Last night I finished Red Sister by Mark Lawrence a PHENOMENAL Adult Fantasy that i’m going to need a couple days to digest before I can write a worthy review. Today, instead of allowing myself to fall into the book hangover that is lingering on the fringes of my bookworm brain..I decided to take the plunge & start Defy the Stars. I am really hoping this one is just as good cuz ya girl just realized this one is 512 pages long, YIKES! haha! wish me luck my bookish peeps, i want to love it but after Red Sister the bar is set high & I’ll settle for like…i’ll take like! *ya hear me Book Gods?!?!*

*Defy The Stars by Claudia Gray will go on sale April 4th 2017

Goodreads Blurb

Noemi Vidal is a teen soldier from the planet Genesis, once a colony of Earth that’s now at war for its independence. The humans of Genesis have fought Earth’s robotic “mech” armies for decades with no end in sight.

After a surprise attack, Noemi finds herself stranded in space on an abandoned ship where she meets Abel, the most sophisticated mech prototype ever made. One who should be her enemy. But Abel’s programming forces him to obey Noemi as his commander, which means he has to help her save Genesis–even though her plan to win the war will kill him.

Together they embark on a daring voyage through the galaxy. Before long, Noemi begins to realize Abel may be more than a machine, and, for his part, Abel’s devotion to Noemi is no longer just a matter of programming.

First Chapter/First Paragraph

In three weeks, Noemi Vidal will Die–here, In This very place. Today is just practice. Noemi wants to pray like the other soldiers she hears around her. The soft ebb and swell of their whispers sounds like waves against the shore. Zero-G even makes it look as if they’re underwater- their hair fanning out from their heads, their booted feet swaying out from their launch harnesses as if caught by the tide. Only the dark star field outside the few small windows reveals how far they are from home.

Confession: I am really still NOT over Gemina & my little heart was crushed last October at Bookcon when I arrived late at the booth for a free arc of this book. So, when I received the email notification giving this arc away on a firstย come first serve basis…I dropped everything I was doing & hopped on the dark vortex otherwise known as Netgalley. Hoping this one is a winner but i’ll def let ya’ll know if it’s not ๐Ÿ˜‰

Top Ten Tuesdayย

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish! Each week, a new topic is put into place and bloggers share their top ten accordingly. This week was a freebie, either do a topic of your choice or go back & do one of the weeks that you missed. I decided to do the June 7th topic “Ten Reasons I Love X” and chose Jessica Jones…

Top 10 Things I love about Netflix Jessica Jones:

1. Jessica Jones is relatable whereas some of our other favorite super humans seem (and sometimes are) a whole galaxy away. Jessica deals with (more like gets by) PTSD, alcoholism, and a slew of other issues. We see her struggle with guilt & a lot of the time, itโ€™s not pretty.

2. The cast of badass female characters starting with Kyrsten Ritter herself (Jessica Jones), Carrie-Ann Moss (Jeri Hogarth) who eerily looks a lot like Robin Wright from House of Cards, and Rachael Taylor (Patsy Walker). These women are the no-nonsense type which I LOVE!

3. The dark tone of the show in general is appealing to me & sets it apart from the Marvel Universe we see on the big screen (same goes for Daredevil). We see the not so pretty side of NYC or what the majority of New Yorkers see on a day to day basis. We also get scenes that arenโ€™t in Times Square which is refreshing, some of lower Manhattan is shown. So our not so flashy city streets made the cut & that was cool to see.

4. Kilgrave- one of the most twisted, manipulative, sadistic, & in many ways sociopath of a super villain. I enjoyed David Tennantโ€™s performance just as much as the amazing cast of women. He is wicked but his thought process & remarks are very funny. I canโ€™t help but laugh at some of the things he says.

5. The introduction of Luke Cage. Seeing as the next Marvel Netflix series will be Luke Cage, it’s awesome to see his history with Jessica Jones play out so that we’ll have that background going into the new series. It also doesn’t hurt to see they have wicked chemistry on screen ๐Ÿ˜‰

6. The subtleties of Jessica Jones’ human powers. It’s not in your face, as a matter of fact if you knew nothing about her from the comics, you’d prob miss the first few times she popped a lock on a few doors lol.

7. Back to Killgrave. This villain will play on your emotions, especially after you learn his story. I found his backstory to be interesting & also raised a few questions.

8. Jessica’s neighbor, I can’t give too much detail as to why I enjoy this character w/out spoilers but he is a fave.

9. The supporting cast- because of how complex & deeply layered some of them are.

10. Last but NOT least, the PLOT! It’s gripping and fast paced. The twists & turns make it binge worthy.

Side note: I am currently watching episode 11 & I am obsessed with this series! I’m already looking into buying the graphic novels that are out so far ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Teaser Tuesdays

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme hosted by Books and a Beat. For this meme, we grab our current read, open it to a random page and share two teaser sentences from somewhere on that page with our book friends.

A Darker Shade Of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Series: Shades Of Magic #1

Hardcover: 400 pages

Publication Date: February 25th, 2015

Publisher: Tor Books

Setting: Alternate London’s

“Kell had seen what happened when power warred with the body, watched it darken in the veins of corrupted men, turning their blood from crimson to black. If red was the color of magic in balance—of harmony between power and humanity—then black was the color of magic without balance, without order, without restraint.”
